Question by quintynsmommy: Are Baby Einstein dvd’s overrated?
We have just about the entire collection and my son can’t stand them. He loves the cd’s though. But he would much rather watch “Little Einsteins” or the “Mickey Mouse Club House!”
I don’t make him watch them. I am asking if anyone else thinks they are overrated

They are overrated if you are assuming that it was teach your child anything. A study was published in Time magazine that showed that kids who watched the videos has a lower vocabulary than kids who learn the natural way (talking to their parents).
I’d be doing lots of research before I fell into that Yuppy trap! Why is everyone trying so hard to make their poor kids into Baby Einsteins? Life is short enough! Every year it seems there is a push to MOLD younger and younger children. Over emphasis on learning at a young age. Give those babies and little children a chance to play and have fun, learn to entertain themselves and be CREATIVE! Not little robots! And don’t get me started on all the video and electronic toys. Give them some plain old building blocks, a pail and shovel. Show them how to build a snow man.

i don’t think they are overrated. but, if he don’t like them, he just don’t like them. as long as he isn’t throwing a fit to watch a tv program, then i think you are fine. if he is into tv so much, that he throws a fit or gets mad, then i would cut the tv down dramatically.
the statistics doesn’t really matter, unless you put your child in a room all day and make them watch tv with no other stimulation. the children whose vocabulary wasn’t real great, im sure their parents weren’t very stimualting to them either, they just don’t tellyou that part.
i have my babies watch baby einstien when he is getting ready to fall asleep for naps or bedtime-after he has looked at his toys & lights, and after the good stimualtion is done. your son may have just grown out of them, who knows. he could be a little smarter than average for his age, and it is becoming boring to him. that makes more sense than it does for the shows to be overated. i watch them with my baby and talk to him while they are on. whats wrong with learning your body parts, and nursery songs?? much better than alot of other crap that is on today!! keep up the good work, and do what you think is best for YOUR son!
