Question by stewieisall: What theory was competing with Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity in the 1900s?
I know there was his theory and someone elses that were debating I guess weather the universe was always here or weather it was created at a point of time. I think it started with SS but I’m not sure.
Yea! Steady State. That’s exactly what I was thinking of.

There were lots of cosmologies, and lots of problems with each.
But since you asked about General Relativity, and not cosmology based on GR, only Newton’s Gravitation was “competing”.
As to cosmologies, there was infinite steady state, (re)cycling, and single boom-crash, usually based on religious writings / indoctrination.

You are thinking of the Steady State cosmology, which competed with the Big Bang, not with Relativity. Both SS and BB were based on GR.
